What is Mastering?

Mastering is the final process performed on a song before it gets printed to CD or released and distributed.  During the mastering process, the mastering engineer works on one or several mixed songs, doing several things:

1. Ensuring they sound sonically similar, and therefore listening to them in sequence is a pleasant experience).
2. Fixing any potential ‘macro’ problems, such as a weak low end, or harsh top.
3. Giving the songs the finishing touch, for example making sure they sound open, warm, wide and whatever else can be done to subtly complement the mix.
4. Making sure the songs are competitively loud with other professionally released songs, while preserving the sonic integrity of the mix.
