What is the difference between Mixing and Mastering?

Mixing is when a multi-track recording is balanced, and individual tracks processed to make them sound better, fix problems, and creatively affected, and eventually combined into a two-track recording (stereo left and right).

Mastering takes two-track mixes, and gives them the final touch – typically making them competitively loud, open and warm sounding, fixing any problems, and making sure multiple songs sound like they belong on the same album (sonically), so they flow better in a playlist.

Therefore Mixing and Mastering are related, but are a different part of the production process.
